Potholes Keep Coming Back? Here’s What’s Usually Missing
March 4, 2026
Potholes Are a Symptom
If you’ve filled potholes again and again, you already know the pattern: it looks better for a short time, then the holes return.
That usually happens because the pothole wasn’t the real problem — it was the symptom.

What’s usually missing
- Proper water control
Water is the number one reason potholes return. If water sits in low spots, it softens the base and breaks the surface apart. - Shape that sheds water
If the driveway is flat or uneven, water doesn’t leave — and potholes reappear. - Stable edges
When edges fail and gravel spreads, the center becomes thin and weak. - A firm base in failing areas
Some potholes form over soft spots. If the base isn’t corrected, filling the hole is temporary.
What a lasting fix looks like
A real fix often includes:
- Regrading/shaping for better drainage
- Correcting low spots
- Stabilizing soft areas
- Adding stone and finishing it properly
Why “just add gravel” isn’t enough
Adding gravel to a water problem is like repainting a leak. It looks fine until the next storm.
If potholes keep coming back, let’s fix what’s causing them.
